Starting a company
1989
Ever since Fazal came to Britain and started to work, he always worked for other people. After a few years at the health authority he felt that he should now do something for himself. He was limited in resources so he tried to develop his translation business which he established in 1985. To support himself he set up a small business where he translated information for other people for a fee. Gradually it was growing and then at one point he decided to expand and focus only on this small enterprise. It was better for him because he could work for himself. All his time was devoted to it.
"This was a great challenge for me, of which I am now very proud. I faced a lot of barriers as a Bangladeshi and an Asian but I felt nobody could stop me."
Fazal Mahmood
Being the eldest son and the breadwinner of the family after the death of his father, Fazal has fulfilled his complete responsibilities by supporting his family members in Bangladesh as well as in Britain. He helped his brothers and sisters establish themselves in respectable places. Over the following few years the business progressed dramatically. It started in a shared council flat without any office equipment or staff. In ten years, he started enjoying working with twenty full time staff and over two hundred freelance suppliers in a fully equipped modern office building situated at the heart of Docklands owned by himself. The building stands proudly opposite Canary Wharf. It is now one of the top ten translation companies in this country. It offers a wide range of languages, which not many other companies can. It also covers a wide variety of subjects.
The business is a member of the Institute of Translators and Interpreters (ITI), Association of Translation Companies (ATC) and the Institute of Linguists (IOL). Amongst the many clients are the Local and Central Government Departments, the NHS Trust and the European Commission. Every sector of the businesses is covered by this business, starting from financial companies, legal firms, local authorities, health authority and many more.
Over the years Fazal has acquired new businesses, they then developed into a group of companies:
Newcom Group includes:
- Newcom Language Services
- Greater London Translation Unit
- Indolingua Services
- Spark Communications
- Newcom Holdings International
- Newcom Property Investments
Dr Mahmood is a positive person, one of the few whose energy and enthusiasm would lead his employees into successfully accomplishing even the most impossible of tasks. He has the gift to see through people beyond their appearances, uncovering their talents and enhancing their skills. All employees are most grateful for the chance to prove their abilities in the highly competitive work market, London.
"The whole time that I have known Fazal, he has been a very hard working person. He has always treated people fairly and helped people in cultural, social and personal needs. His hard work has made him known to the whole community. If there is anyone who can run a charity project effectively, then it would be Fazal."
Kutub Uddin, Brother in Law
"I have known Fazal for twenty-five years now. Personally, I know him as a man of hard work and integrity with dynamic qualities of leadership. He has a strong personality and is a good 'head hunter'. He is quick to identify hidden talents in people and is supportive in helping them to the destination to where they should and want to go. How I see him as a person now is someone whose achievements are great because he is great."
